THE CHASE! We were at just the right place at just the right time today. At 9:30 this morning, we were a few hundred yards west of the Trout Lake parking lot when we spotted the trampoline up-and-down of a deer's ears ahead. It was a young Mule Deer, racing toward us on the left-hand hill above the creek that flows out of Trout Lake next to the (west side of the) road. Then a black figure emerged from the wood behind the deer! And we soon discovered that racing behind the deer was a black Wolf. It was none other than the Black Female of the Lamar Canyon pack in hot pursuit of the young Mulee! We could see the breath of each as the raced past us, and the long pink tongue of the black female, 50 yards back but in hot and unrelenting pursuit! The young deer raced up the hill toward the west end of Trout Lake, and we lost them in the trees heading in that direction back behind us. Had we been seconds further away in either direction, we would have missed this most thrilling and unforgettable moment! |
