Yellowstone Wolf: Tracking the Packs

Yellowstone's wolf packs—Silver

For a couple years prior to 2010 a group of unknown and uncollared wolves were seen periodically near Pebble Creek, in the Northern Range. The alpha female’s distinctively silver coat color is what eventually led to the pack name. As the Druid Peak pack dissolved, the Silver pack moved into their territory, becoming the principal pack in Lamar and Soda Butte Valley for most of 2010. Wolf SW147M, originally collared in the 8 Mile pack, became a core member of the Lava Creek pack before he usurped the alpha position from an uncollared gray wolf in the Silver pack. He allowed the previous alpha male to remain with the pack; a behavior that rarely occurs in the wild. Later in 2010 the alpha male (SW147M) was killed, likely by other wolves. The alpha female was never seen after November 2010, at which point she had a Class III sarcoptic mange infection and was travelling alone. The status of the other pack members was unknown and the pack was officially designated as dissolved.
